Our Dependence on Crude Oil

Our world's dependence on oil is slowly growing as we are merging into a society of new technology. In December 2012, the US produced more than 7 million barrels of oil everyday but they consumed more than twice that amount daily. As our dependence grows, our awareness grows slowly but the awareness needs to catch up or our world will go into a crisis.

Imagine a world without oil. No transport. No cars, no trains, no planes, no buses. But it's not only the transport that we will be deprived of. Crude oil exists in many of our products that we use and consume everyday. Your toothpaste, your cosmetics, your furniture. All of these products consist of crude oil but without it, they wouldn't be the product you want. But they don't only consist of crude oil, they also need it to be transported to your local mall or your house.

But think about the food that you eat. Your fresh apples, bread, milk. They all need crude oil to be transported to your local supermarket so without crude oil, you won't be living the life with the food that you want. Supermarkets will be packed with desperate people. There will be no way to produce food in masses. Also, many manufacturing companies would be closed down and many will lose jobs as there will be no need for those companies because they will have no way to make or sell their product.

Militaries will break down because they depend on oil and countries may start having wars, not only because of poor defense systems but also because they will fight for other people's oil.

Hospitals will start dying, people will become ill, and our world's population will depress dramatically. Everything will disappear into the darkness at night with the lack of light that we will experience.

The cartoon below implies that the USA is consuming all so much oil just to gain the money. Eventually, there will be no more oil because it is being consumed too quickly to be rationed.

The world without crude oil is a scary thought but I'm not hear to haunt you all. I want to tell you how you can help.

We will need to start emerging into alternative power sources such as solar panels, wind turbines, etc.

We can also begin sharing resources around (second-hand objects) after buying good quality products. Many of our major manufacturers today only produce poor quality products and sell it at a very cheap price so they have more customers, but instead of buying these products that only last a few days, you can buy good quality products and hand them down to others.

You may realize that many plastic bottles have become more crinkly and thin than they used to be. This is because the manufacturer wants to save money, but there are many products that are made with containers that a biodegradable. These products should be bought more often so they gain more support.

You can also start finding alternatives to transport. The quickest and probably the most convenient way would be to take public transport like trains, buses and trams, but if you would like to have a more private mode of transport, bike riding or even walking is a great way to not only save crude oil, but also to gain physical fitness.

Every drop counts and we need to start saving crude oil individually. Many may think that an individual can't change much of the world so they will move back to their lives that depend on crude oil, but if a lot of individuals start trying to make a change, there will be a better future for our future generations.

The government has the main control of this crisis though. If they look into this issue, they can do something to make a change but they are focusing on money at the moment as it will cost a lot of money to solve this problem.

Below is a video of the possible happening of our future if we ran out of crude oil. It does seem scary but there is always a way to prevent it.
